TOMAS RIES

Tomas Ries is an Associate Professor at the Swedish National Defence University since 2010. His research includes the globalising security environment, the nature of strategy, security and war, Russian military and security policy, and Nordic security and defence policies.

CHRIS HASSELL

David Christian Hassell serves as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Chemical and Biological Defense, where he is responsible for providing direction, coordination, and advocacy for chemical and biological defense throughout DoD, as well as ensuring integration with interagency and international partners.

FILIPPA LENTZOS

Dr Filippa Lentzos is a Senior Research Fellow at King’s College London, with a joint appointment in the Department of Global Health & Social Medicine and the Department of War Studies. She specialises in the security and governance of emerging technologies in the life sciences. Much of her work is focused on synthetic biology, often identified as the area of the life sciences most susceptible to misuse, but she also examines other emerging fields like genome editing, potentially pandemic pathogens and neurobiology.

JANET-MARTHA BLATNY

Dr Janet-Martha Blatny is the Director for the Protection and Societal Security Division at FFI (2014-) and is responsible for the coordination of societal security projects at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI). She has been a representative of the national preparedness committee in Norway, and is one of the three Norwegian representatives of the NATO STO HFM Panel (since 2012) as well as as the Co-Chair of the NATO STO HFM HMP Area.

OLLI HEINONEN

Olli Heinonen is Senior Advisor on Science and Nonproliferation at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies in Washington, DC. From 2010 to July 2017, he was a senior fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, and before that he served for 27 years at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna (also as the deputy director general of the IAEA, and head of its Department of Safeguards).

Symposium Venue

The city of Rovaniemi on the Arctic Circle is the administrational, commercial, educational, and cultural capital of Finnish Lapland and the home of Santa Claus.
Located in the city centre close to the hotels, the symposium venue, Lappia Hall, is designed by the world-famous architect Alvar Aalto.

Rovaniemi can be reached by air or by several daily train connections from Helsinki.
